The Ones You Love to Hate

An inversion of the common heroic quest, Arc of the Covenant fills archetypal roles with characters that are subverted, distorted, and bastardized versions, essentially turning the archetype on its head.

Our story begins in a small village in a land of dark knights, rumored magic, and wary farm folk. Life is difficult, but ordinary, until one day a strange cloaked statue with two horns and six wings appears in the town square…

Hannah Richelle - Graphic Design and Illustration in Portland, OR - The Innocent Psychopath   An orphan who arrived with a performing troupe and never left, Hara frequents the graveyard where she steals the offerings of honey and dried fruit left in front of the graves for herself. She often lurks in the trees within its gates and taunts or throws stones at passersby, giggling with glee at their confusion and fear. The village calls her a menace, but as no one has yet to catch her (no one can climb quite as high as she) they let her be since it’s only the noisy crows she does any real damage to, their stolen feet swaying menacingly at her belt. The villagers didn’t even need to hear ‘newest enemy’ to know Hara was who the Prophet meant the moment it uttered the word “crow”.

Hannah Richelle - Graphic Design and Illustration in Portland, OR - The Shepherd Sadist   Having been marked as a bit of a pathological liar since he was young, Milek was dumped into sheepherding as a way to have him contribute to society with the smallest interaction with people possible; Little did the villagers know that being cut off from humanity would only lessen his likeness to it. His father brought him to the square so he could perhaps answer to where the dreaded ‘wolf in the land’ that had been raiding their sheep herds at night was, but the Prophet shifted into life as Milek approached and claimed him as the Wolf himself. Presentation based on tarot and playing card aesthetics, adding in a bonus associated ‘sin’ and ‘element’ to further characterize the visualizations.

Hannah Richelle - Graphic Design and Illustration in Portland, OR - The Hero Pedophile   Having committed the most heinous of sins, Javarn rots in jail, a smudge on his village’s name, until he is dragged out after 5 years to be presented to the Prophet, after the schoolteacher and various mothers achieved no response. As soon as Javarn steps into the square, though, the Prophet senses him and rears its wings, its darkened voice booming through the streets proclaiming him “the Leader of The Chosen”.

Hannah Richelle - Graphic Design and Illustration in Portland, OR - The Enchantress Whore   Ironically the richest woman in the village, Lizstqa makes her living in the most depraved way possible. Her sexual sins have been recognized on the legal level, yet she continues to ‘slave’ away at her occupation. In fact, she is in the middle of meeting with pair of clients when town officials come to present her to the Prophet as a possible ‘lover of man’, a title it promptly bestows to her.

Hannah Richelle - Graphic Design and Illustration in Portland, OR - The Goddess Blind Prophet   Sporting both angelic and demonic features, this messenger of the Masters remains stoic and silent until activated when the villagers try to remove it. Words in a strange tongue write themselves upon the pages in its book and it speaks slowly and deeply, with a hum of darkness. It calls for “The Chosen” to be gathered before it, “The lover of children, the lover of man, the crow’s newest enemy, and the wolf in the land.”
